How do you check a PPF install before paying?

Look at five things, in good light, on clean dry panels, before you sign off. The reason to do it before paying is simple: a structural fault — a lifting edge, a stretch mark, a badly placed seam — is set the moment the film bonds and will not improve on its own. Your leverage to have it corrected is highest before money changes hands.

None of this requires special tools. It requires knowing what to look at, and being willing to raise something while it is still awkward to raise. This guide is that checklist.

1. What should the edges look like?

Flat, wrapped where possible, and cleanly terminated everywhere else — never lifting. Edges are where a film install lives or dies, because they are the first thing airflow, pressure washers and time work on. Run a fingertip along the leading edges: the frunk lip, hood, mirror caps and A-pillars are the usual first-lift zones. A well-wrapped edge tucks behind the panel and disappears; a well-terminated edge sits flat and flush.

What you do not want to see or feel is any edge you can catch a fingernail under, any corner starting to peel, or any silvering along an edge line. Those do not settle — they get worse.

2. Where should seams be?

In the least visible places the panel layout allows, tight, and aligned. Some seams are unavoidable on large panels. The mark of a good installer is putting them where you would not look first — along body lines, low on a panel, out of the main sightline — and closing them tightly so they do not collect dirt or lift. A seam running across the middle of a hood in direct view is a workmanship choice, not a necessity.

3. What are stretch marks and glue lines?

They are the visible evidence of over-tensioning, and they do not go away. Colored film should not be stretched beyond roughly 10 to 15 percent. Pushed past that, it leaves stretch marks — faint distortions in the surface — and glue lines where the adhesive has been pulled thin. Look under raking light, at an angle, along the panel. Gloss finishes show these most; deep solid colours show them more than bright ones.

4. Which bubbles are normal and which are not?

Uniform fluid haze is normal; hard-edged bubbles are not. This is the distinction that saves both parties an argument. In the first days to weeks, installation fluid trapped under the film evaporates gradually, producing a soft, even, milky haze that clears on its own. That is expected.

What is not expected is a discrete bubble with a defined edge, a raised blister, or trapped dirt or hair. Those have a hard boundary you can see and often feel, and they will not resolve. The test: if it looks like a soft cloud, give it two weeks; if it looks like a distinct pocket, raise it now.

5. How do you check post-heat if you can't see it?

You ask for the product-specific process because post-heat is not directly visible on a finished car. Edge stability depends on the whole installation: clean substrate, fluid removal, stretch control, sufficient pressure and any finishing heat required by the exact film bulletin. Early lifting can have several causes, so appearance alone does not prove that post-heat was skipped.

A useful answer names the film, the current manufacturer instruction, the corners, edges, recesses or tensioned areas treated, and the instrument used to verify surface temperature.   • Inspecting in poor light or on a dirty car. You cannot see edges and stretch marks in a dim bay on a dusty panel. Insist on good light and clean, dry film.
  • Paying before inspecting. Leverage to have faults corrected is highest before payment.
  • Accepting "it will settle" for structural faults. Fluid haze settles; lifting edges and hard bubbles do not.
  • Panicking about normal haze. Give uniform milky haze two weeks before judging it.
