Is Tesla paint thin enough to justify PPF?

On the evidence available: probably, but for a more specific reason than "Tesla paint is bad." The one properly conducted third-party measurement we could find shows paint that is both thinner and softer than the inspector's stated norm for comparable cars. Thin plus soft means chips and swirl marks appear with less provocation. That is a straightforward argument for film — and it is a better argument than any of the numbers you will see repeated on installer blogs, because it is the only one with a named inspector and a documented method behind it.
What does the only rigorous measurement actually say?
In 2019, Finland's Central Chamber of Commerce inspected a Tesla Model 3 with an inspector named Heikki Nurmela, and with representatives from Tesla and the importer present. That adversarial setup is what makes it worth citing — it was not a detailer's blog post.

The inspector's own conclusion was that the paint is thin and soft, "which is why stone blemishes are more easily formed." The Drive reported the inspection in detail.
Now the caveats, because they matter. This is one car, from 2019, in one market. Tesla has changed paint lines and opened new factories since. It tells you the floor can be low; it does not tell you what a 2026 car off a specific line measures. Anyone presenting this as "Tesla paint is 106 microns" as a permanent fact is overreaching, and so would we be.
Why can't you trust the other thickness numbers?
Because they have no measurement behind them. Search this topic and you will meet the same handful of figures on dozens of pages:

What does a Tesla installation involve?
Two Tesla-specific points deserve emphasis.
Panel alignment must be settled first. Tesla frunk and trunk gaps are owner-adjustable through rubber bumper stops and adjustable feet. Film laid over a misaligned panel does not hide the misalignment — it locks it in, because correcting it afterwards means lifting film that has already bonded. If gaps bother you, fix them before you book.

- Choosing by warranty length alone. Ask what the warranty excludes, and whether it transfers if you sell the car.
